Things You Always Wanted To Know But Were Too Afraid To Ask

Why do Catholics genuflect?

Genuflecting is a gesture of honour to Jesus and to His real presence in the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle. A candle lamp hangs near the tabernacle to signify that Jesus is present inside it.

But Catholics do not genuflect on Good Friday, why is that?

Genuflecting is not done at Good Friday services because the tabernacle is empty. The door is opened and the candle extinguished as if in mourning.

Do Catholics worship Mary?

Catholics honour Mary in prayer and song. Some people mistake prayer for worship, but it isn't the same thing. Prayer is simply entering into communication with a holy spirit. Worship is for God alone, and Catholics worship only God through the mass .

What is a mortal sin?

A mortal sin is a deliberate cold blooded rejection of God which if not confessed and absolved condemns a person after death. There are two other types of sin:

Grave sin - This is a deliberate decision to do wrong and needs forgiveness in the form of the Sacrament of reconciliation.

Venial sin - This is a result of impulse, for example anger, sex or any other emotional wrong doing and is forgiven at every mass you go to.

What is original sin?

Original sin is the gap between ourselves and God caused by our ancestors who deliberately turned away from God creating a gap between ourselves and Him which they could no longer reach over. Gods answer was to send his son to heal that gap and this healing is brought to us by the Sacrament of baptism .
